  The Texas A&M baseball team earned the Big 12’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament and will open regional play on Friday in Coral Gables, Florida, the selection committee announced Monday.

The Aggies, the No. 2-seed in the regional, will face No. 3-seed FIU (36-23) in the regional opener on Friday at 11 a.m. (CDT) at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field. Top-seeded Miami (40-17) will meet Dartmouth (26-17) in a 3 p.m. game. All games of the regional will be televised live by ESPNU.

A&M, which has a game remaining against the Longhorns Saturday afternoon, can end up tied with either Tech or Mizzou but holds the tiebreaker over both.

Cox hit Aron White on touchdown passes of 24 and 2 yards in the second half as the Bulldogs (8-5) pulled away for their fourth straight bowl victory. It was the fourth straight postseason loss for the Aggies (6-7), who have not won a bowl since 2001.

  Quincy Pondexter kept sluggish Washington afloat, scoring 16 of his 25 points in the first half, and the 22nd-ranked Huskies beat No. 19 Texas A&M 73-64 on Tuesday night in a game marred - and largely decided - by a gruesome injury to Aggies senior Derrick Roland.

Roland, one of the leading defenders in the Big 12 Conference and the second-leading scorer for the Aggies (8-3) crashed hard to the court early in the second half after jumping under the basket, breaking his lower right leg.

This marks the third straight year for the Aggies to finish among the Top 18 universities in the country.   Dr. R. Bowen Loftin ’71, vice president of Texas A&M University and chief executive officer of its branch campus at Galveston, was named interim president of Texas A&M today by The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents.

The board took the action after formally accepting the resignation of Dr. Elsa A. Murano, who had served as president of Texas A&M since January 2008 and has announced her intent to return to the faculty of Texas A&M’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. In accepting her resignation, the regents awarded her the designation of president emerita.

The Aggies (36-22) were an at-large selection to the 64-team field and will join TCU (36-16), Oregon State (35-17) and Wright State (33-28) for regional action this weekend. A&M is seeded second in the regional and will face the No. 3-seeded Beavers in the first game at 2:00pm Friday. TCU and Wright State will face off at 7:00pm.

  Texas A&M University has once again retained the trophy as champions of the State Farm Lone Star Showdown. On the strength of its women’s conference title and men’s second-place performance at the Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the Aggies scored two points in the Showdown standings in this year’s final weekend of competition to pull even with t.u. Each school finished with 9.5 points in the final standings, but as defending champions, Texas A&M will keep the trophy for another school year, according to the rules agreed upon by BOTH universities.

  The Texas A&M softball team was selected to the 2009 NCAA Division I Softball Championship for the 19th season, the selection committee announced Sunday. The Aggies (31-20) travel to Gainesville, FL this weekend and will take on Lehigh (36-16-1) on Friday. No. 1 seed and host Florida (55-3) faces Florida A&M (30-30).

  With Brian Davis leading the way, Texas A&M beat Brigham Young 79-66 in the first round of the West Regional on Thursday. Davis scored a season-high 21 points, Donald Sloan had 14 and the ninth-seeded Aggies handed the Cougars their seventh straight opening-round loss in a rematch from last year.

The Aggies (24-9) will meet top-seeded Connecticut on Saturday. The Huskies (28-4) routed Chattanooga 103-47.

    Women’s Basketball: Aggies Earn No. 2 Seed in NCAA Tournament

  For the second consecutive year, the ninth-ranked Texas A&M women’s basketball team tied a program-best by earning a No. 2 seed in the 2009 NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship on Selection Monday.

A&M will face 15th-seeded Evansville (15-18) in the first round of the Trenton Regional to be held on Sunday, March 22 at 11:00am (CT) in South Bend, Ind. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.

  No. 9-seed Texas A&M will face No. 8 seed Brigham Young in the first round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship on Thursday at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia. The game is a rematch of last year’s first-round contest played in Anaheim, Calif., when the teams had identical seeds. The Aggies beat the Cougars, 67-62.

Game time is 11:30am (CT). The game will be televised nationally by CBS Sports.

The Aggies (21-5, 9-4 Big 12) trailed by one before Starks got the ball at the top of the key and drove into the lane for the winner. She also had a long jumper with 2 minutes left to get Texas A&M within striking distance.

  No. 11 Texas A&M claimed its fifth-straight victory over No. 12 Texas, 76-65, to earn another half-point toward the State Farm Lone Star Showdown standings between the two in-state rivals Saturday afternoon before a crowd of 5,840 at Reed Arena.

The Aggies (20-5, 8-4) also turned in their fourth-straight 20-win campaign under Texas A&M head coach Gary Blair and swept the Longhorns (19-7, 7-5) for only the fourth time in program history and third time since the league’s inception in 1996-97.

  Chinemelu Elonu and Bryan Davis scored 15 points apiece to lead Texas A&M to an 81-66 win over Texas on Monday night to break a three-game losing streak. The Aggies (18-8, 4-7 Big 12) led by as many as 19 points in the second half before Texas went on a 16-1 run to get back in the game.

Texas (17-8, 6-5) cut the deficit to 61-57 before the Aggies scored seven straight points to stretch their lead back to double-digits with about five minutes left. The Aggies made nine free throws after that to secure the victory.

The Jayhawks (14-4, 3-0 Big 12) haven’t lost in Allen Fieldhouse since Texas A&M beat them 69-66 on Feb. 3, 2007. The Aggies (15-4, 1-3) are still the only Big 12 South team to win in Lawrence since the conference was formed in 1996.
